Why no Ravana?

Dress them up in Dusshera costumes, the school circular read,
And the mother of the little child stared at it in complete dread.
Was a first, this fancy dress, and she knew not what to do,
Advice from well-wishers she did seek, even though they were so few.

Oh, you must make him a Rama, just get him a saffron dress,
The crown you’ll get in a costume shop or make it all yourself.
Lakshman is a better idea, said one of them to her,
Not many think of turning their kids into Rama’s younger brother.

Why, Sita too, a few chirped in, she can make her little boy,
That was sure to make the teachers see the naughty fun and joy.
Just no one said, “Oh go ahead, dress him in black, why not”
And so she thought, as Ravana she will make her tot trot.

  2. It is so so hard to believe that this was a rushed post as the so called poem clearly rhymes and conveys a very important message to all the readers, the message being that there is more to life than just whiteness, goodness and virtues, and also that evil, badness, and things like that are just in the eyes of the beholder, and how they perceive it.

    1. There is more to life than black and white. I believe in this to the extent I named my blog after the idea. :D

      Thanks, Jairam!

  3. I am so happy that I am past that stage of getting them dressed in fancy costumes. It seriously drove me nuts. Coming to the crux of your post, such a valid observation, Sakshi! It also troubles me that we only see people and read about them in black or white. Either all good or all bad. Some are labeled saints, others sinners. I really wish that they could share all aspects about a person, even a mythological figure, for a child to understand that there is so much grey that exists in the world. N looks so adorable in the pic!

  6. Ehhh- A Kidnapper. An inspiration to Siddhu, who once starts laughing stops after the episode... You could also go for Rama's 4th brother who comes after Bharat. Mmmm, name of that guy? You tell me?

    1. If I knew Ravana was an inspiration to Siddhu-of-the-verbal-diarrhoea, I would have changed my mind. But not for any other reason, no. :)

  12. Too good...loved it and your little Ravana looks really adorable. I'm sure the school would have had a hard time explaining the burning of the Ravana or they might have skipped it as well. :-)

    1. Thanks, Rekha. When I went to pick him up the previous day of the fancy dress, I heard in one of the classrooms - Ram ney kisko maara? Raavan ko. Kyun maara? Kyoki woh Sita ko ley gaya thaa. Needless to say, the tots were repeating the answers by rote. Baap rey!
But anyway, mein hoon na, to amend/re-do/make learn a different perspective. ;)
